“I’m doing all the things, posting consistently, showing up in stories… so why am I still not getting clients?”

We hear this all the time, so let’s talk about it with zero sugarcoating. The truth is, you’re not actually doing all the things. You’re doing some of the things, and there’s always room to improve your strategy.

This episode is fiery — we’re talking about distraction and what it’s costing you, how to look at your results as data instead of a personal attack, and why life meets you at the level of your audacity. We’re in Camp Modern Agent Mode, so this episode is basically one giant mic drop.

The Truth About “Doing All the Things”

When you say you’re doing all the things, what you usually mean is: you’re posting content. Maybe you’re showing up in stories here and there. Your graphics look decent, and you’re checking the boxes.

But here’s what you’re probably not doing: having conversations. Showing your face on camera consistently. Staying visible beyond just posting. Connecting with people in a way that makes them actually remember you when they scroll away.

The first question we ask when someone tells us it’s not working is this: How many conversations are you having every week?

We don’t care how many views your posts get. We don’t care about your likes or shares. If you’re not having conversations with your followers and with people in real life, none of those numbers matter.

Conversations can be anything from someone commenting on your story saying “me too,” to someone DMing you about a house they saw. But if we’re not having these conversations, nobody is remembering who you are as they go throughout their day, and then you’ve basically wasted your time showing up.

Content is just one piece of the puzzle. It’s like someone walking by your storefront. They see what you’re about, but then what? They need a reason to walk inside. They need to see you in your stories, hear your voice, feel like you’re an actual human who cares — not just someone scheduling posts and moving on.

Your Stories Are Where the Magic Happens

Stories are the thing that’s going to lead to conversations more than anything else, and the key to doing them effectively is being more concerned with showing up than showing off.

Stop worrying about proving your worth by showcasing how many houses you sold. Just be human. Talk about going to showings and closings while you’re cleaning out your car before picking up your kids. Share what you’re doing in real life without overthinking it.

Your hottest leads and your most likely to refer you people are the ones watching your stories. Not the random person who happens to see your reel and not other agents.

So if you want to use social media to grow your business in the form of actual clients and referrals, forget about going viral, and focus on connecting.

Stop Taking It Personally and Start Looking at the Data

When things haven’t been working for a while, it’s really easy to take it personally and feel like a failure.

We have to stop looking at what hasn’t worked as a personal reflection of who we are and start looking at it as data. Numbers have no emotions attached to them. There’s nothing personal there; it’s just information telling you what to try next.

If you posted something you thought was really good but it didn’t perform, step into the shoes of your ideal follower and ask: Why didn’t this resonate? Is my face missing? Is my city name in it? Does it feel cohesive with the rest of my content? Am I using words they would actually say?

When you literally use the words your people are thinking, your content will change drastically. And then you become someone they feel comfortable with because you get them.

Sarah Blakely was rejected how many times before her big break? Oprah, Vera Wang, the Drybar girl… Content’s going to get rejected. People are going to choose not to work with you over and over again, but every single thing you post is leading you closer to your breakthrough.

The Most Expensive Thing You’ll Ever Pay For as a Business Owner

Your most expensive cost as a business owner is getting distracted.

If you have four memberships, you screenshot content ideas every single day, or you have 18 folders of saved content, but you’re not doing anything with it… it’s time to stop.

Don’t have three coaches or listen to 18 podcasts. Instead, pick one thing and stick with it. Follow it and don’t get sidetracked by every new trend or shiny object.

The noise is everywhere, and it’s not calming down. So you have to figure out how to control it. You need to get focused and find the thing that’s going to work for you so you can stay consistent without constantly second-guessing yourself.

Get 1% Better Every Single Day

We love James Clear and Atomic Habits, and here are two quotes that changed the game for us:

“If you can get 1% better each day, you’ll be 37 times better by the end of the year.”

So if you want to be better at showing up on social media, you can’t wait around for that magical day to strike. You’re not going to wake up one day where your alarm goes off and says, “Hey, today’s the day to get on stories.” You have to just start doing it now and keep going.

The only way to get better is to do it; you have to show up and make it a habit.

The other quote:

“Intensity makes a good story. Consistency makes progress.”

If you want progress, if you want it to become effortless, you have to take the actions, and you have to stay consistent long enough to see the results. But at the same time, you also have to make changes to improve as you go.

It’s a combination of both. You can’t just post graphic after graphic and wonder why it’s not working without ever trying something new, but you also can’t give up after one post flops.

Action creates clarity. As you start to show up, not only will it get easier, but you’ll start to see what actually works for you and your audience.

What Does “Taking Your Business Seriously” Actually Mean?

There’s a big difference between marketing your business on social media and SERIOUSLY marketing your business on social media.

Taking it seriously means going beyond checking the box. It means being intentional with everything you put out there. It means showing up with conviction and confidence, not just posting because you’re supposed to.

We had a member who recommitted to staying consistent using Modern Agent content this year, and in only her second week, she said the difference in her engagement and the quality of her content was unbelievable.

That’s what happens when you buckle down and do the work. It’s not even so much about the content itself but about your mindset and how you’re showing up.

If you’re speaking about yourself and your business with excitement, people feel tha and reflect it right back. But if you’re posting with no energy, if you’re not eager to have those conversations, people can tell.

Here’s a quote that has us fired up:

“Life meets you at the level of your audacity.”

Are you going to be audacious enough to show up anyway, even when you feel like no one cares? Even when you feel like it’s not working? Even when you feel cringy?

This is only up to you. You are the only one who has the power to change what’s happening in your business.

The Checklist: What to Do Right Now to Start Seeing Results

We talked about a lot, but here’s what it comes down to:

Take it seriously. If you’re not taking it seriously, it’s not going anywhere. This is first and foremost the biggest priority.

Take your personal feelings out of it. Look at it as data, as patterns. Look at how you can try different things.

Practice and make it a habit. Show up every day to get 1% better every single day over the next year.

Get your face on camera. Not just a picture of your face. Someone needs to actually see who you are and what you’re like. Even if they don’t listen to what you’re saying, they’re going to see you over and over, which has a cumulative effect.

Get ready every day. Wake up and get ready. Even if you have no appointments or you didn’t sleep at all last night. Do the five-minute makeup routine. Put on something that makes you feel good. When you’re ready physically, you’re ready to get your face on camera, to show up in your stories, to potentially talk to someone at the coffee shop. You’re ready for the day in every capacity.

If we had to start with one thing from this entire episode, it would be this: Get ready every day. Show up every day. Get 1% better every single day.

And you will have a completely different, much better business at the end of this year.
